Burger King Bar... Sets the Bar Low

Well, if you're the kind of person that hangs out at Burger King, things just got a whole lot better:

Gimme a Whopper, fries — and a beer.

Those words are no longer wishful thinking. Friday, Burger King (BKC) will unveil plans to sell beer and burgers at a Whopper Bar — a new BK concept to compete with casual dining restaurants — in Miami Beach's tourist-heavy South Beach. The South Beach Whopper Bar is scheduled to open in mid-February.

I actually really like the trend that more casual, "family" type places are serving alcohol. I mean, I haven't eaten at a Burger King in about a decade, but it's this kind of change that might help folks of all stripes loosen up about alcohol. To bad they're just serving MillerCoors.

  1. I heard this on Motley Fool, a nationally-syndicated radio program/podcast I love (think ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, but applied to personal investing), and it made me laugh.

The guys were saying selling beer to customers turned Euro Disney around financially, and that it'll likely be good for BK's bottom line, too.

I can only imagine the conversation they had about this in the boardroom.

Executive #1: McDonald's is killing us on same store sales growth figures. We've got to do something to mix things up! The latest ad didn't help.
Executive #2: What if we sold beer? Everyone loves beer!
Executive #1: Hmm, what "pairs" well with a Whopper?
Executive #2: I know, Miller Lite!

  2. Yes, I am reasonably sure that an IPA doesn't help the saturated fat go down smoother - you need some rice beer to do that trick.

I do think that selling beer is a great idea - I assume they don't because of liquor licenses, but more importantly, the fear of people boycotting or the like because it sells the deviljuice (i.e. alcohol). This is more proof that we're actually not as conservative a nation as people think, but corporations (and politicians) don't want to be the first to test the waters. I mean, we still don't let gay people into the military.

Nice script, by the way. I like Executive #2's passion.
